- Rock Hudson plays a nineteenth-century army officer named Lance Caldwell, assigned to the Everglades. He immediately clashes with his commanding officer Major Dade who intends to wipe out all of the Seminole Indians from the region. Caldwell’s friend, Osceola, rescues him during a deadly confrontation, and is later murdered in Fort King as he tries to bring about peace.
