Originally from Springfield, Georgia, John Maynor moved to Fort Pierce in grade school. Maynor worked at different places, including Dandy Bread, the East Coast Railroad, and at packing houses. Eventually, he made a living by painting signs for businesses in the Fort Pierce area. Like many other Highwaymen, Maynor started out by making frames before becoming a landscape painter. Livingston Roberts taught him how to paint in the early 1960s. Maynor produced several paintings a week.
