Except for a tour of duty in the Army during the Korean War, Alfonso (sometimes spelled Alphonso) Moran lived his entire life in Indian River County, where he found employment as a barber and a house painter. His introduction to the art world came in the 1950s, when he made frames for landscape artist A. E. “Bean” Backus. Moran began painting landscapes in the late 1960s. He helped the Buckner brothers and Willie Reagan at the beginning of their painting careers by setting them up with oils and other supplies. Moran gave up painting to pursue a career as a pool shark and professional gambler.
