Dennis Croft Jr. ran a bait shop and boat landing on a pond near Marianna. He and his friend John Barefield began making fishing lures in 1949 and started the Blue Spring Bait Manufacturing Company. The company only lasted a few years and was out of business by the mid-1950s.
