Space Contractor and Flown Covers
Contractor covers are printed by companies that contracted with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a way to celebrate their participation and achievements in a particular space program. Often the companies mailed them to astronauts, business leaders, and government officials. Most of these contractor covers are from Bendix, a major contractor for NASA that provided launch support services for the Apollo missions that aimed to land humans on the surface of the Moon. They were addressed to US Representative Don Fuqua of Florida who served on the Committee on Science and Astronautics, later renamed Committee on Science and Technology. A flown cover is one that was officially flown aboard a spacecraft. All of the missions featured on these covers launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, and bear the Kennedy Space Center postmark.
