First Flight and Aviation Covers
Most of the covers in this category are first flight covers. The Contract Air Mail Act of 1925 permitted the US Postmaster General to contract with private aviation companies to transport mail. It helped spur the development of commercial aviation. The covers in this category note milestones in Florida’s air mail delivery history. They were produced to mark the beginning of a new air mail route. The covers do not have the first-day-of-issue postmark, but they are special for the cachets they display and their relationship to Florida’s aviation history.
