Guy Labree: Painted Stories of the Seminoles

Museum of Florida History
The Museum of Florida History is proud to present Guy LaBree: Painted Stories of the Seminoles. The exhibit features original and reproduction paintings by Guy LaBree, often considered the foremost artist of Seminole-themed paintings. His artwork portrays Seminole lifestyles, legends, and history, as well as nature scenes.
Also on display are objects from LaBree's studio, such as his easel and the palette he used throughout his entire career. Other artifacts help to demonstrate a connection with the Seminoles that began in childhood when his schoolmates included Seminoles from a nearby reservation. This exhibit celebrates the life and art of Guy LaBree and his unique relationship with the Seminoles of Florida.
Programs
The Museum will offer several programs related to the exhibit.
September 29, 5:30–7:30 p.m.
Opening Reception for the Guy LaBree: Painted Stories of the Seminoles exhibit, featuring live music from the Rita Youngman Band.
October 8, 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
2nd Saturday Family Programs
Patterns of the Seminoles — This activity will examine how patterns represent different ideas in the Seminole tradition.
October 20, 6:30–8:00 p.m.
Seminole Tribe of Florida Historian and Chief Justice Willie Johns will discuss the history of the Seminole Wars. Visitors will hear about this influential period in Florida from the perspective of the Seminoles. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with light refreshments and at 7:00 p.m. Johns will speak. After the presentation visitors are invited to tour the exhibit.
November 17, 6:30–8:00 p.m.
Elgin Jumper: A Seminole's Story.
At times humorous, at times powerful, Elgin Jumper recounts his story, his highs and lows, while spotlighting his writing and artwork. The performance also sheds light on Jumper's family history, troubled youth, wrong paths, and how he was saved from a ruinous existence through art and poetry. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. with light refreshments, followed by Elgin Jumper's performance at 7:00.
