About the Memorial Logo
The eagle depicted on this logo is taken from a 3-cent postage stamp first introduced on July 4, 1942. It featured an Allied "V" for Victory shape with an eagle to create an American symbol for the war effort. Across the eagle's chest on the stamp were printed the words "Win the War." With the outcome of the war in mid-1942 uncertain, this stamp expressed a strong public resolve. The "V" eagle became a popular WWII image.
