Punta Gorda Army Airfield first saw use as a training base in September 1943 as an auxiliary field to the 3rd Air Force facility at Sarasota Army Air Base.
Pilots trained on P-40 Warhawks, P-47 Thunderbolts, and P-51 Mustangs. The 27th Service Group served as the base detachment with the 502nd Fighter-Bomber and 490th Fighter Squadrons training here.
One WWII extant structure is presently used by the Experimental Aircraft Association. Numerous iron tie-downs used to secure fighter planes are still visible and are used today for civilian aircraft.
This base became the Punta Gorda Airport after the war.
