DIRECTIONS
Use Exit 95 from I-95 and proceed east 5.4 miles to US 1. Turn right (south) and proceed 1.9 miles to King Street. Turn left (east) and proceed east for 0.8 miles, cross the Bridge of Lions and proceed south on Anastasia Boulevard (A1A) for 1.4 miles to Red Cox Road. Turn left onto Red Cox Road; proceed north for 0.2 miles to the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum on the left.
This site is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Visually striking with black and white painted spiral bands, the lighthouse first saw use between 1871 and 1874. The tallest structure in St. Augustine, the United States Coast Guard stationed armed lookouts at this site during World War II. Using a team of four, one man took watch at the top of the tower at all times. Because of German U-boat patrols in the Atlantic off of the Florida Coast, it became necessary to dim the light to prevent ships from being silhouetted in the beam.
Maintained as a navigational aide, the tower and grounds are leased to the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, Inc. to allow interpretation and public access.
