DIRECTIONS

This observation post is located on the ocean side of A1A across from the Ocean Village Camper Resort at 2162 Ocean Shore Boulevard in Ormond-By-The-Sea. From I-95, exit on SR40 (Exit 88) and proceed east to dead end at A1A. Turn left (north) on A1A and travel approximately four miles to the site.

Established by the Florida Defense Council and the U.S. Army’s Third Interceptor Command, 489 observation posts were completely organized in Florida by October 1941. Moreover, plans called for the eventual establishment of 850 such posts throughout the state. Local citizens, trained in the recognition of aircraft, volunteered to become members of the Ground Observers Corps to staff these posts. Working in two person teams on two-hour shifts, observers maintained twenty-four hour coverage.

This observation post is thought to be the only remaining such structure on the Florida coast.
