October Evening, Lost Creek

This oil painting by Tallahassee artist Dean Gioia features Lost Creek, which is located in the Apalachicola National Forest in southeast Leon County, Florida. Gioia is known for his manipulation of light, creating mystical, emotional landscapes. Lost Creek is an old-growth forest that has not been significantly disturbed by wind, fire, or logging, and it is characterized by having a high level of biodiversity. The Lost Creek forest is a slope forest composed of beech, magnolia, spruce, and pine trees. Many of the plant species in this area are common to the southern Appalachian Mountains.
