Enslaved and free artisans produced many of Tallahassee's territorial period bricks by hand. When left exposed, the porous bricks and lime-based mortar required constant maintenance against the elements. The stucco applied to the masonry walls at Union Bank helped prevent excessive moisture intrusion. The stucco coating also allowed artisans to make the bank appear as if it was constructed of large stones.
