DIRECTIONS
From Florida's Turnpike, take the SW 288th Street/Biscayne Drive exit (Exit 5). Stay left at the fork in the ramp and turn left onto Biscayne Drive/SW288th Street. This road leads directly to Homestead Air Reserve Base.
The site of South Dade County Airport prior to World War II, the beneficial occupancy of Homestead Army Airfield occurred in November 1942. Prior to occupancy by the military, Pan American Air Ferries Corp. provided transport service for the Army Air Corps.
Homestead served initially as a departure point for shipment of transport aircraft. Using a southern route to South America and then Africa, aircraft traveled to the Middle East and the China-Burma-India Theater. The 54th Ferrying Squadron, part of the Caribbean Wing’s 15th Ferrying Group, provided crews for various types of aircraft for war usage. By 1943 the field came to specialize in training of transport pilots and crews.
With the surrender of Japan in August 1945 and severe hurricane damage the same year, Homestead AAF closed for several years. Major damage caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 influenced the change in use of this base from the Air Force to the Air Force Reserve. This is a closed installation. Public access is allowed only after receiving prior permission from the Homestead Public Affairs Office.
