DIRECTIONS

Orlando Executive Airport is located three miles northeast of downtown Orlando, on Herndon Avenue, just south of Colonial Drive.

Originally the Orlando Municipal Airport site, Orlando AAF came into being in late 1940 with the arrival of the Air Corps Tactical School from Maxwell Field in Alabama. Orlando AAF provided Army and Navy personnel training in the latest air tactics and doctrines. Air intelligence officers and inspectors received training here as well. Work on developments in Allied and enemy technological and tactical techniques established Orlando AAF’s prestige within the Army Air Force during WWII.

Training of B-29 Superfortress crews began here in 1943 and the focus of training shifted to communications, medical specialties and other less combat-specific roles.

German POWs arrived at Orlando AAF in November 1944 with as many as 756 assigned to this site during their incarceration. In addition to military base-related duties, many worked in groves, packing houses, and a cement plant under civilian contracts.

With the close of hostilities, Orlando AAF reverted back to the city to become Orlando Executive Airport. No evidence remains of the WWII facility at this site.
