DIRECTIONS
The Dunnellon/Marion County Airport is located approximately five miles east of Dunnellon on CR 484.
First employed in 1942, the Dunnellon Army Airfield served as an Air Support School to the Army Air Forces School of Applied Tactics, Orlando. Troops received training as pilots and crewmen of the British-design Horsa glider as well as training to become C-47 Skytrain pilots. Graduates saw duty in North Africa, Europe, and the China-Burma-India Theater in this capacity.
Units stationed at Dunnellon during the war included the 27th Troop Carrier Squadron, 894th Airborne Engineers, 805th Medical Air Evacuation Unit, 898th Guard Squadron, and the 426th Night Fighter Squadron.
This site returned to use as a municipal airport after the surrender of Japan in August, 1945.
