James Weldon Johnson


This cacheted cover and its commemorative stamp honor Jacksonville, Florida, native James Weldon Johnson, civil rights activist, author, and educator who wrote Lift Every Voice and Sing, which became known as the Black national anthem. He later taught at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The US Post Office issued the stamp on February 2, 1988, as part of its Black Heritage stamp series.
