A. Philip Randolph


This cacheted cover and its commemorative stamps honor A. Philip Randolph, civil rights activist and long-time leader of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first all-Black labor union in the United States. Randolph was born in Crescent City, Florida, and grew up in Jacksonville. He later moved to New York City. The US Post Office issued the stamp on February 3, 1989, as part of its Black Heritage stamp series.
