On August 28, 1565, Spanish ships under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés first sighted Florida. Soon after, Menéndez founded St. Augustine. The US Post Office issued the commemorative stamp shown on this cacheted cover in St. Augustine on August 28, 1965, to mark the 400th anniversary of this historic event.
