If you've ever gone grocery shopping in Florida, it's likely your trip included a visit to Publix. In 1940, George Jenkins opened a Publix market in Winter Haven, Florida, the first air-conditioned grocery store in the country. He created grocery store palaces, introducing such innovations as fluorescent lighting, wide aisles, automatic doors, tiled floors, frozen-food cases, and paved parking lots. Today, Publix is the largest employee-owned business and the seventh-largest privately owned company in the nation. Pins, like the one pictured, were distributed to Publix employees in 1983.
