Football Helmet
Football is one of America’s favorite pastimes since its modern origins in the late 1800s. This helmet, currently on display in the Museum’s Highlights Gallery, was used by Florida resident Zack Tribble at Deland Junior High School in the 1950s. Unlike the hard plastic helmets of today, this football helmet is made of leather with ear flaps and minimal padding. These helmets were uncomfortable to wear due to their poor ventilation and lack of face protection. (Collection of the Museum of Florida History)
