Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, where he was supporting a sanitation workers strike. King believed the next phase of civil rights was economic justice and in 1968, he organized the Poor People’s Campaign. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, and the national holiday recognizing him is held on the third Monday in January.
