Ballot Box
This pine ballot box was used in Leon County elections after 1900, but before World War I. Later it was used in the Old Capitol by Florida Secretary of State Bruce Smathers for the public to cast non-binding votes on whether or not the historic Capitol should be saved from demolition. The box is filled with these unofficial Capitol vote ballots. Today, the Florida Historic Capitol Museum is a monument to historic preservation and interprets the history of government in the state.
