Sage Nickel began the Nickel Tackle Company in 1949 in Jacksonville. Also in 1949, he applied for a patent for a plastic, hollow lure body with interchangeable pieces and received the patent two years later. The lure allowed the fisher to make a wide variety of lures by replacing different parts and using different inserts.
