Betty Skelton

Pensacola native Betty June Skelton (1926–) learned to fly planes as a child. She won numerous aerobatics championships and set several altitude records. Skelton was part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administrations program to test women for the astronaut program in 1959. She also test drove cars and set world records for land speed and distance, and was the first woman inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame.
