Florida Department of State
Secretary of State
For Immediate Release
August 15, 2015
On Saturday, August 15, join the Museum of Florida History as we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II with "Celebrate Victory." Florida sent 248,000 soldiers off to war and more than 300,000 civilians volunteered in defense activities. This event will offer a unique opportunity for visitors to enjoy remembrances of some of the last members of "the greatest generation" as veterans and civilians share their wartime experiences. The soldiers that fought in this great conflict will be honored with a wreath-laying ceremony at the World War II Memorial outside the R. A. Gray Building.
"The Museum of Florida History and the Florida Department of State are proud to salute the many Floridians who served during World War II," said Secretary of State Ken Detzner, "This event provides the public an opportunity to learn about their experiences first hand."
Beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the R. A. Gray Building lobby, visitors can explore activity stations to learn about victory gardens, recycling, rationing, and other efforts people, including children, across the state made to support the war. Other activity stations will explore actions soldiers performed during the war including communication through code, signaling, and airplane spotting. Then at 2:30 in the Heritage Theater, WWII veterans and civilians will share their stories. The wreath-laying ceremony will follow at 4:00.
