History at High Noon: DeSoto in Apalachee

Dr. Jonathan Sheppard discusses Hernando DeSoto’s encounters with the Apalachee in 1539—40. De Soto’s force spent its first winter on the North American continent in Apalachee Province, where the expedition found shelter in the abandoned houses of the Apalachee Indians, and subsisted off of the bountiful produce of the land. However, the five months De Soto spent in Apalachee Province were to have unplanned consequences on the course and conduct of his expedition. Enjoy lunch during the program. Bring your own or buy from The Egg Express located on the ground floor of the R. A. Gray Building.
